 James turned ONE today! Mom and Dad tagged team a visit and their boy was SO pleased. Yay for one year of James!         *** More holes, and more fitting! Rollers and other loose parts continue to grab Room 3's interest... Mia spent a number of minutes hooking and unhooking, dropping, picking up and repositioning these two hooks. She never expressed dismay or frustration as she turned them in and away from each other. And in the end of the session she wanted to share her findings. And Rosie, after 5 months of having rollers in the classroom, continues to befriend them and pursue that satisfying fit. Familiarity and competency feel good.
Last week, the class had an exciting opportunity to reconnect with clay, an activity that always sparks curiosity and creativity among the children. As the materials were gathered and carefully arranged, an air of anticipation filled the room. However, in the midst of all the preparation and excitement, Maya was so focused on organizing the session that they didn’t have a chance to help the children change into their "Art shirts" before the activity began. This meant the kids jumped right in, unbothered by the potential for a little mess—and what fun it turned out to be! The clay was thoughtfully divided into three different forms to allow for exploration of its varied properties: one tray contained water alone, another held a mix of water and clay, and the last offered pure, unaltered clay. Each option provided a unique sensory experience, and the children eagerly dove into their explorations. Unsurprisingly, most of the children gravitated toward the water tray first. The allure of splashing around was simply irresistible! Tiny hands turned the tray over, sending small splashes everywhere, and then they enthusiastically splashed some more. Some of the children, in their endless curiosity, even decided to taste the water—a moment that brought some giggles from Maya. This hands-on session with clay was not just messy and fun but also a wonderful way for the children to engage with different textures and states of matter. Watching them explore so freely reminded everyone present of the simple joy of discovery that childhood brings.  A very happy birthday to Isabella!!! Maureen and Jeremy came in with raspberries and song to celebrate Isabella's first run around the sun.  *** Play of the birthday day(s) has been focused significantly on holes/fitting and paint! Our laundry crate has been adopted into play. We have been working mostly with objects that can fit into the holes. Everyone that has come to the crate is pretty clear on that mission. We have had smaller crates in the past but this combo of larger crate and rollers has been much more enticing. Fine motor skills are also at a new level, bringing down potential frustration and bringing up the great satisfaction of a plop! into the hole. *** Paint is becoming more and more familiar. Interest is high. We are still differentiating between sitting at the table to eat food and sitting at the table to play and not eat (but maybe taste) this slippery bright substance. We have introduced brushes and the (closed ) bottles, they are all being put through the taste test. The children have been very interested in how things work and how materials fit together. They carefully inspect materials and furniture in the room. As well as put one material inside another. They are really working to understand how things in their world work. Do you see this interest at home? After lunch we played outside for a little bit. Our interest in figuring out how things fit together and how they work continued. |
